AUSTIN
REED
Turning ecommerce into a core growth engine.
How a heritage menswear business transformed digital from a small channel into a strategically important source of revenue, capability and international growth.
We had the brand and the stores. Dave helped us build the digital engine to match our ambition. — Nick, Group CEO

The opportunity was visible.
The organisation wasn’t ready.
Austin Reed had the heritage, recognition and physical retail presence. Ecommerce remained small compared with its potential.
Customer behaviour was changing, but the systems, stock, operations and internal ownership required to serve those customers had not yet been built to scale.
The website was visible. The business engine behind it was not.
Digital was a channel.
It needed to become a business.
The opportunity extended far beyond increasing website traffic. Stock availability, merchandising, fulfilment, technology, customer experience and team capability all affected the result.
Decisions sat across different functions. Digital performance depended on parts of the organisation that did not yet share one operating rhythm.
This wasn’t simply a website problem.
It was an operating-model problem.
And a commercial-growth opportunity.
Connect digital to the wider business.
We rebuilt the digital proposition as a connected commercial operation rather than an isolated website project.
That meant strengthening the customer offer while improving the stock, systems, team and operating decisions behind it.
- Digital proposition and customer journey
- Stock visibility and availability
- Trading and merchandising rhythm
- Technology and site features
- Team capability and ownership
- International expansion
Digital became a core growth engine.
in online revenue
Improved stock visibility, trading discipline and scalable digital operations.
Stronger capability, clearer ownership and better connection to the wider business.
Improved customer features and foundations for international expansion.
The lesson
Digital transformation is rarely a website project.
It is a business transformation—with a website at the front. Sustainable digital growth happens when the proposition, people, stock, systems and decisions move together.
Ask yourself three questions.
- Is digital connected to the commercial priorities of the whole business?
- Can customers buy what they want without our internal systems getting in the way?
- Are we improving a website—or building a scalable digital operation?
